THE LATEST ENTRY, NUMBER 86, IN HA-HA XXVIII
IS THE SEAWIND 1160 CAT CUBO LIOSTA
A Stock Shot of a Seawind Catamaran
The Aussie-built cat is owned by Jim Hinkle, a 65-year-old cabinet shop owner from Willits. She's a near sistership to Lance Loti and Sherri Benedict's Seawind 1260 Quest Grande II from Blaine, Washington. The Seawinds are two of the seven catamarans that have signed up so far for this year's Ha-Ha.
Jim's twin brother Tom, a printer in Santa Barbara and a member of the Santa Barbara YC, will be Jim's crew, along with Donny Parker, 55, a boat mechanic. It's always good to have a boat mechanic as crew.
Twins Jim and Mike owe their love of the ocean, surfing, boating, and diving thanks to their "wonderful parents." When the boys were young, their dad bought them an 18-ft Sol Cat, which they sailed and raced every chance they had.
But Jim got a special sailing thrill right after getting out of high school when he helped deliver the 83-ft St. Francis YC based Alden schooner, Serena, back from the TransPac.
The Great Schooner Serena
It's hard to imagine two boats more dissimilar than Serena and Cubo Liosta. Serena is/was a long, heavy wood schooner, while Cubo Liosta is a light and lively fiberglass catamaran that is probably much faster off the wind.
What does Cubo Liosta mean? We guessed it's some kind of tropical cocktail. But having done some research, we're beginning to suspect that Jim made a typo when registering. There is no translation for Cubo Liosta, but Cubo Lista means Bucket List, which sounds more likely.
Anyway, we're looking forward to sailing south with Jim and his crew, like we're looking to sail south with a whole bunch of folks. The Ha-Ha starts on October 31, see the Rally Notice here and sign up here.
The Baja Ha-Ha is the 750-mile cruisers' rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, with R&R stops at Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria. Well over 3,000 boats and 10,000 sailors have done a Ha-Ha to date. We hope this year is your year.
