THE BEACH PARTY IS THE SECOND
ORGANIZED HA-HA SOCIAL EVENT,
AFTER THE
CLASSIC BAZEBALL GAME, IN TURTLE BAY,
THE FIRST OF TWO R&R STOPS IN THE BAJA HA-HA.
There will be ice cold beer for sale, 200 Poobah Ha-Ha Dogs for Charity, and maybe some other food. In addition, there will be music for listening pleasure and dancing.
Participants can do as much or as little as they want at the beach party.
There will be socializing, volleyball, BBQ-ing (and often sharing of just-caught fish), socializing, surfing/boogie boarding, the women versus men Tug 'O War (the women have won 16 times in a row), more socializing, beachcombing the nine-mile long beach, dancing, even more socializing, maybe a bonfire, and we're not sure what else. Ya never know.
Historically, the most anti-authoritarian fun Ha-Ha kids have had is being allowed to attack the Grand Poobah with biodegradable water balloons. That activity is a definite 'maybe' for this year. "Kids on a beach never need organized activities," the Poobah says in arguing against it.
The beach party site is at the western edge of the spectacular Baja Badlands and is a couple of miles to the east of the main anchorage. Typically about a third of the boats re-anchor just off the beach party, while others take their dinghies over or get rides in pangas. Getting a panga ride is the safest and easiest method, especially if there is a swell.
If you haven't made a score of new sailing friends by the end of the beach party, you're doing something wrong.
At the risk of repeating ourselves, the Ha-Ha is the 750-mile cruisers' rally from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, with R&R stops at Turtle Bay and Bahia Santa Maria. Over 10,000 sailors have done it. This might be your year.
The Ha-Ha departs San Diego under the spray of fireboats on October 31, the day after the Last Cheeseburger in Paradise and Costume Kick-Off Party at the West Marine Superstore.
Ha-Ha registration starts at noon on May 11. The earlier you sign up, the higher you are on the list for a possible, we repeat possible, slip in Cabo San Lucas.
