AHOY FROM THE TURTLE GIRLS!
We are looking forward to the Baja Ha-Ha as it is rapidly approaching. We are sharing our tentative plans for activities so you can plan ahead and know what we are up to!
If you are interested in taking part in the Turtle Spotting Program on this year’s Baja Ha-Ha, we will have a table at the kick off party. Visit us with any questions or interests you might have. We will also be announcing events, facts, and turtle sightings on the morning radio throughout the trip.
Tentative Schedule of Events
- 11/03 Kick Off Party Table - Stop by and ask us questions!
- 11/08 Turtle Bay - Afternoon snorkeling and beach games
- 11/11 Bahia Santa Maria - Snorkeling
- 11/12 Bahia Santa Maria - Workshop and beach games for kids
- 11/13 Man O’ War Cove - Seminar and beach games
- 11/16 Cabo San Lucas - Sea Turtle Spotter Award!
We also have workshops on sea turtle biology and identification, ocean plastics, sustainable fishing, and new research on turtles that we will be presenting intermittently throughout the trip. If you are interested in having us on-board your vessel or boarding Jersey Girl with us for a presentation or workshop, please contact Abigail at abibea22@gmail.com or stop by our table at the kick-off party on November 3rd. We can figure out the timing of these as we go.
If you partake in reporting sea turtle sightings for the Sea Turtle Spotter program during this trip, we ask that you record your sightings. We will have data sheets to record your observations along the trip. You can radio your observations to us along the way or give us your data sheets at the awards ceremony in Cabo so we may upload the information.
To be more involved as a citizen scientist and record sightings on your own, even after the Baja Ha-Ha, we ask that you follow these instructions:
- Download iNaturalist app or go to inaturalist.org
- Create an account
- Join the Sea Turtle Spotter project
- Tell us your user name so we can count your sightings during the rally
When you see a sea turtle, please record:
- The coordinates of the sighting in decimal degrees
- The species of turtle (if you can identify)
- A picture of the turtle
- The turtle’s behavior or condition (alive or stranded, feeding, swimming, etc.)
The person with the most turtle reports or who is most involved will win an award at the party in Cabo!
We look forward to meeting you all soon.
