CATAMARANS MAKE UP 10% OF HA-HA ENTRIES TO DATE
The HH55 Ticket to Ride.Twelve of the 128 entries for November's Baja Ha-Ha are catamarans. They range from very high performance cats, such as Kevin Millett's 50-ft carbon Kalewa and the Stich's state-of-the-art HH55 Ticket to Ride, to more common production cats from Lagoon and others. The smallest is Kyrie, a Prout 37. The largest is the mothership Profligate at 63 feet.

The Grand Poobah doesn't like to tell boat owners what to do, but he will relate the story of Lionel Bass, who bought Kiapa, a high-performance M&M 50-ft cat that had been beautifully built by Schooner Creek in Portland. Assuming that such a light cat wouldn't have a need for spinnakers, he sold them. Then he kicked himself hard all the way across the Pacific, realizing there are times when white sails only leave cats a big light air performance gap. He tried to buy the chutes back, but the new owner declined. So he kicked himself again.
