THIS IS A REMINDER OF A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT
EVENTS FOR SOUTHBOUND SAILORS
ABOUT TO GO CRUISING SOUTH AND NEED HELP WITH SAILMAIL AND/OR SSB?
We understand because they are not the easiest things to learn how to use. SSB, for example, is many times more complicated than VHF, and SailMail is beyond that.
But if you're heading down to San Diego for the October 29 start of the Baja Ha-Ha, or will just be in town, you're in luck. That's because there will be workshop/seminars on both subjects care of Downwind Marine.
On October 22, Jim and Sue Corenman, who circumnavigated with their Schumacher 50 Heart of Gold, will be giving a seven-hour workshop/seminar on SailMail. Jim has all the answers, because he, along with fellow radio and electronics genius Stan Honey, are the ones who created it 20 years ago. So by attending the workshop, you are going to the fountain of all SailMail knowledge. The Buddah, as it were.
Shea Weston, the guru of SSB radio installation, will also be there. If you have SSB problems, he has answers. But at this late date, he may not have the time.
There is a fee of $50 a person or $75 a couple for Jim and Sue's seven-hour workshop, and you'll want to make reservations. Take it from the Grand Poobah, this is time and money well spent. For more info, go to www.saildocs.com/seminars.
Then on October 26, Retired Navy Commander/cruiser Terry Sparks will give a three-hour classroom workshop/seminar on the operation of the Icom 802 SSB radio. When it comes to SSB radios on boats, the 802 is the standard. If you just bought a SSB, you should really attend this seminar.
There is a fee of $38 for the first member of a boat crew, and $25 for each additional member. Register online at: www.made-simplefor-cruisers.com/apps/webstore. Space is limited.
DOWNWIND'S CRUISER WELCOME POTLUCK AND BBQ
But don't forget that on Saturday, October 20, before either of the above mentioned seminars, Downwind will be holding their annual Cruiser's Welcome Potluck Party & BBQ. Free food! Free beverages! Discounts on gear. Vendor reps on hand! The festivities start at noon and run until 5 pm.
The Grand Poobah of the Baja Ha-Ha, the Assistant Poobah, and Dona de Mallorca-Spindler will all be there, although only until 3 pm. You got Ha-Ha questions? We'll be there with Ha-Ha answers.
If you need crew or want to crew on the Ha-Ha, this is an opportunity to see if you can find what you're looking for.
Go to www.downwindmarine.com/downloads/2018CruiserEvents.pdf to learn more about these and other cruiser events put on by Downwind.
