Baja Ha-Ha XXV

Back in 2003 we took our 63-ft catamaran Profligate to the Caribbean, and in the spring of the following year participated in the Heineken Regatta, one of the premiere regattas of the Caribbean.

Among the multihulls we raced against was the Chris White designed Atlantic 55 catamaran Rocketeer.

So guess which is the latest boat to sign up for this year's 25th anniversary Baja Ha-Ha? The same Rocketeer!

The funny part of that regatta is that it was the debut of Roy Disney and Hasso Plattner's MaxZ86s Pyewacket and Morning Glory.

For whatever reason, the multihulls were the first start of the first race in that regatta, with the MaxZ 86s starting 10 minutes later.

Thanks to a ballsy start, we on Profligate were the first boat to the weather mark. Yes, we beat the two MazZs to the weather mark — thanks to a 10-minute head start.

Pyewacket then quickly passed us with Morning Glory about 30 seconds behind. Our goal on that second leg was simple: stay the hell out of their way!

The starting order of the race was crazy, of course, as the MaxZ86s, with their canting keels and towering rigs, were far faster than our cruising cats. Fortunately, race organizers switched the starting order for the rest of the regatta.

Morning Glory

While the Ha-Ha is a cruising rally not a race, it's going to be fun to sail with, not against, Rocketeer.
